Car key won’t turn in the ignition? Here’s what to do.

This one feels scary because you’re stuck - but most of the time, it’s fixable.
Start with the safe checks first. No forcing. No snapping a key.

Step-by-step (safe + simple)

1 Stay calm This is annoying - but rushing makes it worse.
Take 10 seconds. Breathe. The goal is to avoid snapping the key or damaging the ignition.
2 Check the steering wheel lock This is the #1 “it won’t turn” reason.
If the wheel is locked, the key can feel “stuck.”
  • Gently turn the steering wheel left/right (just a little).
  • While doing that, try turning the key.
3 Inspect the key Worn, bent, or damaged keys don’t seat properly.
Look for bending, cracks, or heavy wear. If the blade looks off, don’t force it - it can snap.
4 Try a spare key Fast way to rule out a key issue.
If a spare works, your main key is likely worn (or the chip/fob is failing on some vehicles).
5 Lubricate the lock (lightly) Sometimes it’s just dry / sticky.
Use a lock-safe lubricant (not cooking oil). A tiny amount on the key can help. If it feels worse, stop.
6 Gentle jiggle - not force Small movement can align wafers/tumblers.
Light wiggle while turning is okay. If you’re needing muscle — stop. That’s how keys break.
7 Call a pro if it’s still stuck Quick diagnosis can save the ignition.
A proper automotive locksmith can usually tell if it’s the key, the ignition cylinder, or a related issue — and fix it safely.
8 Ignition repair (when needed) Cylinder, wafers, or ignition components may need service.
If parts are worn or sticking, an ignition repair can restore smooth turning and reliable starts — without replacing the whole vehicle ignition system unnecessarily.
9 Prevent it next time Small habits, fewer surprises.
Make a spare key and keep it somewhere safe. Occasional ignition lubrication/maintenance can also help prevent sticking.

What’s the likely cause?

Steering wheel lock Very common
Worn / bent key Common
Dry / sticky cylinder Sometimes
Ignition wear / internal issue Possible
Important: If the key feels like it’s going to snap, stop.
A broken key + stuck cylinder is a bigger problem than a simple “won’t turn.”
