Automotive Help • Key Stuck in Ignition

Key stuck in the ignition? Don’t force it.

This is stressful - we get it. The good news: most stuck keys have a simple cause. Start with these safe steps and you’ll avoid snapping a key or damaging the ignition.

What to do (step-by-step)

Gentle wins. Force loses.
  • Stay calm Take a breath. Rushing usually leads to forcing — and forcing breaks things.
  • Check the gear selector + parking brake Make sure you’re fully in Park (or Neutral on some vehicles) and the parking brake is engaged.
  • Adjust the steering wheel (lightly) Turn the wheel a tiny bit left/right while you gently try to remove the key.
  • Check the battery A dead battery can sometimes affect the ignition lock. If needed, try a boost.
  • Lubricate (key-safe only) Use a proper key/lock lubricant (not oil). A tiny amount can help free sticky parts.
  • Try a spare key If the spare comes out smoothly, your main key may be worn or slightly bent.
  • Avoid force If it feels stuck, don’t muscle it. That’s how keys snap and ignitions get damaged.

Common causes

Usually one of these
  • Vehicle not fully in Park
  • Steering wheel lock pressure
  • Worn / bent key
  • Dry or sticky ignition cylinder
  • Low / dead battery (on some models)
When to call a pro
  • The key stays stuck after the steps above
  • The key is twisting, bending, or feels like it could snap
  • You suspect ignition damage
  • You’re not sure what’s causing it (totally normal)
Quick note: Pulling hard can break the key inside the ignition - and that turns a small problem into a bigger one.
